Doing Darwin Solo
Named by Lonely Planet as one of the 10 ‘must see’ places in the world for 2012, Darwin is loaded with unique Top End experiences and attractions. They include pumping nightlife, fantastic markets, a burgeoning foodie scene, Aboriginal culture, and wilderness that will take your breath away.
Here are the must-do things that just have to go on your bucket list for Darwin.
No. 1: Kakadu National Park
Nothing can prepare you for the awesomeness of this vast and spectacular wilderness, which has been home to humans for over 50,000 years – longer than anywhere else in the world. It is one of only a handful of places on the planet that’s World Heritage Listed for both its natural value and its cultural significance. Be prepared for your eyes to pop and the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up when you see the prehistoric rock art, the escarpments, the wetlands, the wildlife, and all the other wonders of Kakadu. Either drive yourself or take a tour from Darwin. You can do it in one day but more is better.
No. 2: Get up Close to a Crocodile
Darwin has many places to smile at a crocodile. But we dare you to enter the world’s one and only Cage of Death at Crocasaurus Cove for a once-in-a-lifetime underwater encounter with massive saltwater crocs. Imagine the photos you can stick on Facebook. And this amazing wildlife park is just a 1.5km walk up the road from Vibe Hotel Darwin Waterfront!
No. 3: Boat or Canoe up Katherine Gorge
In a word: WOW. Lots to see and enjoy as you make your way through the 12 gorges that make up this spectacular wonderland. Swim, rock climb, explore, and play spot the freshwater crocodile! Don’t panic – these little guys have better manners than their much larger and hungrier saltie cousins.
No. 4 Explore Darwin’s Beautiful Waterfront
The locals are hugely proud of this newly developed precinct, and understandably so. It’s just gorgeous, and there are several unique and cool things to do, including:
- The Wave Lagoon & the Recreation Lagoon. Both are top spots for a dip and a play
- Deckchair Cinema for the most chilled movie experience you’ll find
- Stokes Hill Wharf for succulent seafood
- Mitchell Street pubs and clubs – a perfect place to eat, drink and play at the end of a busy day exploring.
All this is waiting for you just outside your Vibe Hotel. How good is that?
